The AFSL Consumer Fireworks Program incorporates voluntary standards for all 22 categories of consumer fireworks devices, and updates them periodically.
AFSL’s consumer fireworks standards incorporate all federal CPSC and Department of Transportation (DOT) performance and labeling requirements, and additional provisions developed by the Standards Committee to help improve the safety of the products. The Standards have been published in English and in Chinese to aid the manufacturers' understanding of the applicable requirements.
AFSL Standards for Consumer Fireworks are developed by a Standards Committee appointed by the Board and composed of technical experts; representatives that manufacture, import, distribute, or retail fireworks; federal and state agencies that regulate the safety of fireworks, the insurance industry; and consumers.
AFSL maintains a database to track the testing of consumer fireworks. The chart below summarizes the results of testing AFSL member's consumer fireworks since the program was implemented in 1994.
